Student Visa Information

A student needs to meet certain requirements to obtain a student visa. Each visa that DIAC issues has a particular subclass, which is related to the student’s study intentions.

By considering this subclass and the country shown in the student’s passport, the student is then given an assessment level (AL).

To obtain a student visa, it is necessary to:

1- Submit a student visa application;
2- Pay an application fee;
3- Provide a valid passport;
4- Provide appropriate information about financial ability to pay for living expenses and study costs;
5- Provide appropriate information about academic and English ability;
6- Provide a CoE (Confirmation of Enrolment) for each course required;
7- Provide information that the student has Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC);
8- Declare that the student is of good character, sound health and has no debts to the Australian Government.

Student visas are divided into 7 subclasses, which depend on the level of study of the course as described by the Australian Qualification Framework (AQF). Each subclass has different requirements.

Before applying for a student visa, it is necessary to understand which subclass of visa is required, as this information must be indicated on the visa application form.

The seven sub-classes are:

    570 - Independent ELICOS
    571 – Schools
    572 – Vocational Education and Training (VET)
    573 – Higher Education
    574 – Postgraduate Research
    575 – Non-award
    576 – AusAID and Defence

The duration of the visa depends on the Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) form(s) submitted with the visa application. The visa awarded will cover the full length that is in a sequence or package.

Working visa component of the Student visa:

From 26th April 2008, all student visas are granted with permission to work in Australia. As a result, these student visa holders – and their family members travelling with them – do not need to apply for permission to work separately once they arrive in Australia.
